Transitional Year

The Transitional Year Residency Program at St. Vincent's Medical Center prides itself on the integration of transitional year residents with other trainees, particularly those in internal medicine, which is the major sponsor.  Most transitional year residents also elect to take time in the radiology program, which is the second sponsor.

The required rotations include two months of in-patient medicine, three months of intensive care unit medicine, one month of ambulatory care, and one month of Emergency Medicine.  During the medicine, ICU, and ED rotations, transitional year residents are treated like internal medicine interns.  They have the same clinical schedules, and participate in all conferences offered to Medicine housestaff.  They participate in journal club, and case presentations to visiting experts in Gastroenterology and Infectious Disease.

Transitional Year residents structure their five months of electives according to their particular interests.  The one requirement for these electives is that they include 140 hours of ambulatory care experience.  In the past four years, residents have chosen rotations in Pediatrics, Gynecology, pain management, Geriatrics, and Orthopedics, which have more than fulfilled this requirement.  As mentioned above, most transitional year residents take advantage of the well-developed teaching program in Radiology for one of their electives.  Other possibilities include Surgery, Neurology, Pathology, medical and surgical sub-specialties, and research.  Every effort is made to tailor the elective time to each resident's interests and needs.
