Internal Medicine - Preliminary Year

The Preliminary Year in Medicine is designed for people who want a solid grounding in the field of Internal Medicine.  The St. Vincent's program takes three to five Preliminary residents each year.  Some of these individuals choose the Preliminary track because they are unsure of their ultimate career path, and others choose it as a first step to training in Radiology, Anesthesiology, or other fields.  Several of the undecided group do eventually decide to stay in Internal Medicine.

Preliminary residents have the same basic schedule as the first year categorical residents, but they are not required to follow a panel of patients in Continuity clinic.  Preliminary residents may elect to have Continuity clinics, and some choose to do so to gain experience in this important facet of Internal Medicine.
