Clinical Rotation: Intensive Care Units

All patients admitted to the Medical Intensive Care Unit are cared for by the housestaff.  The Intensive Care Unit is an excellent site for residents to learn how to manage critically ill patients.  Residents also learn to manage the full range of state-of-the-art technology employed in treating these patients.  By the end of their training, residents are expert with ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring, central lines, etc.

St. Vincent's is the regional center for cardiovascular care.  The catheterization laboratory is busy 24 hours a day.  Residents have the opportunity to assist with a wide array of invasive and interventional procedures.

The ICU team consists of one senior resident, one junior resident and four first year residents.  All housestaff take call every fourth night.  On the nights when the ICU residents are not on call, a night float resident supervises the PGY1 resident.  All the housestaff round with an Intensive Care Specialist every morning; clinical pharmacologists and fellows often participate in these rounds.
